From the time he was born in 1901 to the time he died in 1966 Walt Disney lived in a world of fantasy. The rest of the world was lucky enough to be able to share Disney's fantasy which still lives today.

Walt Disney got his start in high school. He was the cartoonist for the high school paper. In 1919 he moved to Kansas City set on having an artistic career. He got a temporary job at an ad company and met a man that would become a very close friend and a partner in later endeavors, Ubbe Iwerks.

Together Disney and Iwerks went on to create their own studio, Iwerks-Disney Commercial Artists. While it didn't last for very long, it was Walt's first experience in creating his own company. While working a temporary job at another company he learned about cutout animation and decided to be an animator. This was the beginning of what would go on to become the Walt Disney Company, a huge media conglomerate.

Disney's first venture into cel animation production was called Laugh-O-Grams. They were shown in a small local movie theater. They went on to become hugely popular. Laugh-O-Grams studio was very popular and Disney hired many other animators to work with him. Unable to manage money well the company went broke.

After Laugh-O-Grams shut down Walt Disney, along with his brother Roy O. Disney, went west to Hollywood to seek their fortunes.

Once in Hollywood, the Disney brothers started a new studio and started producing new shorts. They were the Alice's Wonderland series. They were a live-action/animated set of shorts. These movies were the basis of the Disney Brothers' Studio. It was in 1925 that he hired an animator named Lillian Bounds who became his wife.

It was also during this time that Walt created his first animated character that was a popular character, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. In '28 Disney went to Universal, who owned the rights and distributed the shows, to ask for higher fees. They refused and took Oswald away from him.

While that was a personal disaster leading to his company going bankrupt again, it ended up turning into a good thing. That loss pushed him into creating Mickey Mouse. Walt personally voiced Mickey until 1947. There were several silent Mickey shorts before Steamboat Willie came about. It was groundbreaking because Mickey actually had sound. That caused Disney to start using sound in all his cartoons and pushed Mickey's popularity to zoom.

Following several other shorts Disney decided to create a feature length animated movie, his first, the Oscar winning Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Everyone thought that he was crazy but it went on to become wildly successful.

Taking the profits from Snow White, Disney started a new complex of studios for his company. The Walt Disney Studios are where the company remains headquartered. Disney Studios made several more feature length movies as well as shorts. They slowed down during WWII because the animators were working on propaganda films. It was actually during this time that Walt came up with the idea of his theme parks. He wanted to have somewhere that his animators' kids could play. He even had a plot of land for the park across the street from the studios.

After the war, Disney Studios branched out into live action films like Treasure Island, and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. But there were also several animated movies made during this time, including Bambi.

Disney also partnered with another well known Company to create a show that would end up being one of the longest-running primetime television series, originally called Disneyland and eventually The Wonderful World of Disney. This was the start of Disney's multimedia empire. They also started Buena Vista during this time to distribute their own films. It was also during this time that The Mickey Mouse Club also started.

Using the TV series, in 1954 Walt revealed his idea for Disneyland Park in Anaheim California. In 1965 the announcement was made for Walt Disney World in Orlando Florida. Walt died in December 1966 before he could see the opening of that park. In 1967 the last two movies that he had a hand with were released.

Roy O. Disney took over and led the company until his death in 1971. From the early '70s through the middle '80s Disney's movies weren't as successful as they had been in the past. But they continued making movies and having television shows. They also started The Disney Channel on cable and releasing movies on videocassette. The main focus of Disney during this time was Walt Disney World. They added EPCOT center to the park.

In 1984 Micheal Eisner took over as CEO of The Walt Disney Company and started leveraging it into the media giant that it is today. New movies like The Little Mermaid reversed their fortunes, as well as new animated television shows.

The 1990s brought more parks to the Disney line up, Disneyland Paris and Disney's California Adventure Park. They continued making movies like The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast, which featured Disney's first venture into computer animation.

The 1990s and 2000s Disney also went on to make a distribution agreement with an independent animation studio called Pixar, which they went on to buy in 2006. Disney also purchased ABC television. With the purchase of Pixar Disney has started making hand drawing their movies again, beginning with The Princess and the Frog.

At the end of the first decade of the 21st century Disney has taken over the media world. They have their own radio station, music group, animation studios, movie company and cable channels. They also own ABC. Disney also owns a huge chunk of theme park and leisure activities with 7 parks or resorts all over the world and their own cruise line.

From the dream of one man who came up with a mouse named Mickey to a major media and entertainment giant, The Walt Disney Company has created fantasies for people young and old all over the world.

As the narrator tells us, the action about to take place "has happened before, and will all happen again", only now it will happen in Edwardian London in the neighborhood of Bloomsbury, where George and Mary Darling's preparations to attend a party are disrupted by the antics of the boys John and Michael, acting out a story about Peter Pan and the pirates, told to them by their older sister Wendy. The father angrily declares that Wendy has gotten too old to continue staying in the nursery with them, and it's time for her to grow up. That night they are visited in the nursery by Peter Pan himself, who teaches them to fly with the help of his pixie friend, Tinker Bell, and takes them with him to the island of Never Land.

A ship of pirates is anchored off Never Land, commanded by Captain Hook with his sidekick Mr. Smee. Hook boldly plots to take revenge upon Peter Pan for cutting off his hand, but he trembles when the crocodile that ate it arrives; it now stalks him hoping to taste more. The crew's restlessness is interrupted by the arrival of Peter and the Darlings. The children easily evade them, and despite a trick by jealous Tinker Bell to have Wendy killed, they meet up with the Lost Boys, six lads in animal-costume pajamas who look to Peter as their leader. John and Michael set off with the Lost Boys to find the island's Indians, who instead capture them, believing them responsible for taking the chief's daughter Tiger Lily.

Meanwhile, Peter takes Wendy to see the mermaids, where they see that Hook and Smee have captured Tiger Lily, to coerce her into revealing Peter's hideout. Peter and Wendy free her, and Peter is honored by the tribe. Hook then plots to take advantage of Tinker Bell's jealousy of Wendy, tricking her into revealing the location of Peter's lair. Wendy and her brothers eventually grow homesick and plan to return home. They invite Peter and the Lost Boys to return to London and be adopted by the Darling parents. The Lost Boys agree, but Peter is so set against growing up that he refuses, presumptuously assuming that all of them will return shortly. The pirates lie in wait and capture the Lost Boys and the Darlings as they exit, leaving behind a time bomb to kill Peter. Tinker Bell learns of the plot just in time to snatch the bomb from Peter as it explodes. (This scene is completely different from Barrie's play; in the play, Captain Hook secretly poisons Peter's medicine, and Tinker bill drinks it to save his life. Peter then pleads with the audience to clap their hands if they believe in fairies. they do, and Tinker Bell is made well again.)

Peter rescues Tinker Bell from the rubble and together they confront the pirates, releasing the children before they can be forced to walk the plank. Peter engages Hook in single combat as the children fight off the crew, and finally succeeds in humiliating the captain. Hook and his crew flee, with the crocodile in hot pursuit. Peter gallantly commandeers the deserted ship, and with the aid of Tinker Bell's pixie dust, flies it to London with the children aboard. However, the Lost Boys decide to return to never Land rather than be adopted in London.

Mr. and Mrs. Darling return home from the party to find Wendy not in her bed, but sleeping at the open window; John and Michael are asleep in their beds. The parents have no idea that the children have even been anywhere. Wendy wakes and excitedly tells about their adventures. The parents look out the window and see what appears to be a pirate ship in the clouds. Mr. Darling, who has softened his position about Wendy staying in the nursery, recognizes it from his own childhood, as it breaks up into clouds itself.

Beyond the original tale and the Disney film, Aladdin is a popular story in its own right, and was long before Disney commercialised it.

Probably the biggest appreciators of Aladdin are those in the pantomime tradition, where it is one of the most popular stories to perform. Pantomimes are fun, exaggerated kinds of plays, with the emphasis very much on family entertainment and audience participation. All the men are played by women, and the women by men, and two people will generally dress up as an animal such as a cow or a horse. You can see pantos in Britain, Australia and Ireland, among other countries.

Aladdin has probably been performed in panto form since not long after the story arrived in Europe, with evidence all the way back to at least the early 1800s, although the tale is sometimes merged with that of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves. It also includes some rather strange additions such as Widow Twanky and Wishy Washy, Aladdin’s mother and brother respectively.

Since 1966, there has been an Aladdin themed hotel and casino on the Las Vegas Strip, which also incorporates a very large shopping centre. The whole thing is decked out in cheesy but enjoyable cod-Arabic style. Unfortunately, it’s going to be re-themed as a Planet Hollywood resort and casino any year now, so go and see it while you can.

There are also numerous animated film versions of Aladdin, either pre-dating Disney’s version or shamelessly cashing in on it. While the newer ones are generally poorly-produced and can be safely ignored, some of the older ones are actually far superior to their more famous cousin.

From Disney themselves, of course, there is no end of Aladdin-related product even today, from colouring books to soft toys. If you’re ever at Disney World, you might take a ride on the inevitable Aladdin’s Magic Carpet ride.

Aladdin – Music to Remember

While the plot of Disney’s Aladdin is perfectly competent, and Robin Williams does a star turn as the genie, it is the film’s songs that make it truly memorable, to the point where Disney has been able to produce successful stage musicals in the same way as it has for the Lion King.

The song everyone remembers, of course, is A Whole New World. It won an Oscar, a Golden Globe and a Grammy, not to mention finally knocking ‘I Will Always Love You’ off the top of the chart – not bad for a sentimental song from a kids’ film. It still weighs heavily on the public consciousness, and is apparently the most-performed song at every American Idol audition.

Then there’s the title song, Arabian Nights, which refers to the title of the original book the story was taken from (variously known as the Book of One Thousand and One Nights, or 1,001 Arabian Nights, among other translations). This song was the source of considerable controversy in the Arab world upon the film’s original release, because of the lyric “where they cut off your ear if they don’t like your face”. This has since been changed to “where it’s flat and immense and the heat is intense” for the home video and DVD releases.

Then there’s the song that introduces the genie, Friend Like Me, with one of the trippiest sequences in any Disney film. It was this song more than anything that made the genie such a great character, although he also does well in the Prince Ali song (the one that he sings when Aladdin becomes a prince and makes his way to the palace).

Overall, when you look at the music of Aladdin, it is surprising how good it is as a whole – there really isn’t any one song that lets the side down. It is doubtlessly one of Disney’s finest musicals.

Disney Character Dining - Where to Dine With the Disney Princesses at Walt Disney World

Character meals are some of the most popular activities at Disney World. There are opportunities to eat with Mickey Mouse or Winnie the Pooh, but I think you will find that the Disney Princess character meals are the most popular of all. Many little girls, and sometimes even grown-up ones like myself, love the princesses, so what could be better than joining Snow White, Cinderella or Aurora for breakfast?

There are currently two restaurants that serve breakfast and lunch where the Disney Princesses come to meet everyone at each meal. The most popular, Cinderella's Royal Table, is located inside Cinderella's Castle in the Magic Kingdom. Breakfast is the most popular meal here and thus the most difficult place to get a reservation.

So if you want to take your own princesses to Cinderella's Royal Table for breakfast, you will need to plan ahead, 90 days ahead to be exact. Exactly 90 days before you want to eat at Cinderella's Table, you must be on the phone to Disney's Dining line, (407) WDW-DINE, to make a reservation. I recommend that you start dialing just before their lines open, which is at 7 a.m. eastern time

If you don't manage to get the breakfast reservation right when you call, I would go ahead and book a lunch reservation if one is available. Chances are, you may never get that breakfast reservation if you didn't get it when you called exactly 90 days out.

Now I totally understand why Cinderella's Royal Table is so popular. It's in the most popular park, the Magic Kingdom, and it is in the castle. But if you want to avoid some of the frustration of trying to book a reservation there, I think there's a wonderful alternative to consider. The Akershus restaurant in Epcot also has Disney Princess character meals.

Located in the Norway pavilion, Akershus features Princess Storybook Dining in their Royal Banquet Hall, with its great castle atmosphere. You can make reservations for breakfast, lunch or dinner and the princesses are there for all three settings. Meals are served family-style and the Princesses will wander about the room greeting and spending time with each party.

For some park guests, Akershus is their first choice for dining with the Disney princesses. Many guests who have enjoyed the princess experience at both restaurants are more likely to return to Akershus. Cinderella's can be a bit over-hyped, and for some diners, it tends to feel a bit rushed. You will probably have a better character experience at Akershus. Plus you can try out some special Norwegian dishes at lunch or dinner. For picky eaters, you might want to stick with breakfast, which is when they serve American cuisine.

There is one other thing to keep in mind if you are trying to decide between the two restaurants. If you are going to use the Disney dining plan, Cinderella's Table requires two table service meals and Akershus only requires one. So you'll save a fair bit of money dining with the Princesses in Norway.

The character Winnie the Pooh has lived on for generations in the hearts of children everywhere who have followed the journey of the little bear and his friend Christopher Robin. From the pages of the first Pooh books to the big screen of the Disney animated adventures, Pooh proved to be a resounding success, and it was inevitable that its promoters should capitalize on it by creating a line of Pooh merchandise in the form of a whole line of stuffed bear animals and other products. As outstanding as this success story is, however, the real story behind the Winnie character is found in that of its author, A.A. Milne.

Born in London, England in 1882 as the youngest of three boys, Alan Alaxander Milne received influences early on that would prove to be instrumental in shaping his literary career. The school he attended, Henley House, was owned by his father and Milne was fortunate enough to have the literary legend H.G. Wells as one of his instructors. Wells noted the gift for words that Alan possessed and later developed a friendship with the young student. In college Milne wrote for a student magazine and started freelancing for magazines and newspapers. Noting the quality of his works, H.G. Wells encouraged the young Milne to compile some of his articles into book form, and it was through this that Milne decided to publish the book Lovers in London in 1905. The book enjoyed good commercial success at the time, but Milne admitted later that he did not particularly like it, so much so that he repurchased the publication rights to the book to prevent further reprints.

After completing college Milne contributed to the British humor magazine Punch and later became the assistant editor. At Punch he met his editor's daughter Dorothy (also known as Daphne) whom he married in 1913. His writing career was briefly interrupted by military service in 1915 but thereafter Milne began to write prolifically. He managed to publish numerous plays which were quite successful as well as three novels. The true inspiration for the character we would recognize as Winnie the Pooh, however, came from the birth of his son Christopher Robin Milne in 1920.

Milne published a book of children's poems before eventually writing the famous Pooh stories. Like the Pooh stories, these poems borrowed inspiration from the young boy Robin. As an example, he published a book of poetry called Vespers which is said to be inspired by the time that Milne had spent observing his son Robin say his prayers at bedtime. After the finished work was submitted to Vanity Fair (netting him $50) Milne was asked to submit more, and eventually he published a well received children's book of poetry.

The direct influence of the Pooh bear comes from the military however. A bear named Winnipeg whose mother was killed by a hunter was found by the Canadian militia and used as a mascot in World War I. Later Winnipeg was sold to the London zoo and it was there that the young Christopher Robin, fond of animals, found him. Winnipeg remained in the zoo until its death in 1934 and Christopher Robin named his teddy bear after it. Inspired by his young son's affection for the bear, Milne began to write the story of "Winnie" (Winnipeg) the Pooh and the young Christopher Robin.

Four books telling the story of Pooh and his journeys would go on to be published, eventually published and translated in thirty four languages and making the author very famous. To illustrate the Pooh books Milne enlisted the services of Ernest Shepard, one his professional acquaintances who worked with him at Punch magazine, agreeing to give him twenty percent of the books' royalties for remuneration.

It was not easy at first for the real life Christopher Robin to accept his identification with the central human character in the Pooh stories, and he had become somewhat estranged from the elder Milner as time went on. Robin eventually resigned himself to his place in the Pooh legacy. After service in World War II Robin married his cousin Lesley de Selincourt and opened his own bookstore. After the elder Milner's death Robin wrote two books of his own, The Enchanted Place and The Path Through the Trees.

The Pooh story is based on the real life journey of these three characters: Milne the writer, Winnipeg the bear, and Christopher Robin the young boy. Without them there would be no Winnie the Pooh.
